WAEC Syllabus for Home Management

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has provided the syllabus for Home Management and other subjects to guide candidates in their examination preparation. The syllabus shows the topics and areas that candidates are expected to study before sitting for the examination.

Scheme of Examination
The WAEC Home Management examination consists of three papers, and candidates are expected to take all three papers.
- Paper 1: 50 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 1 hour. The paper carries 50 marks.
- Paper 2: Six essay questions will be provided, and candidates will answer four within 1 hour 15 minutes. The paper carries 50 marks.
- Paper 3: A practical examination lasting 3 hours. It will be conducted by a visiting examiner appointed by WAEC and carries 100 marks.

Choosing a Life Partner: Factors to consider, including blood group, genotype and HIV status; dating, courtship and engagement. Preparing for Marriage: Readiness for marriage, accommodation, maturity and finances; introduction of partners to their families; and marriage ceremonies in different localities. |

Choosing a Family House: Ways of acquiring a house, including renting, mortgage, building, buying, inheritance and gifts. Economic, social and psychological factors to consider; site, ventilation and design; and guidelines for choosing a family house. Setting Up a Home: Meaning of a home and difference between a house and a home; home equipment and furnishings; large and small equipment; hard and soft furnishings; and fixtures. Home Improvement and Interior Decoration: Meaning and importance; elements and principles of art and design; colour, texture, line, proportion and rhythm; guidelines for interior decoration; and flower arrangement. Home Utilities: Sources, uses, purification and storage of water; electricity, including meter reading and electricity bills; and household fuels such as cooking gas, kerosene, firewood, charcoal and electricity, including their uses, storage, advantages and disadvantages. Home Maintenance and Repairs: Cleaning agents and materials such as water, soaps, abrasives and polishes; cleaning equipment and tools; care of surfaces such as wood, tiles, Formica, concrete and plastic; care of carpets, linoleum, mats, rugs, terrazzo, parquet and other floor coverings; care of furnishings and ornaments; cleaning different areas of the home; and bed-making.
